ABOUT ILOVIK

Sidrište

Ilovik is the southernmost populated island of the Lošinj archipelago. With an area of only 5,8 km2 , it falls into the category of smallest Croatian islands. Nowadays, the homonymous fishing village on the island has about one hundred permanent residents. The coast is easily accessible from all sides, with many tamed bays. The island has a shop, post office, bakery, pastry shop and several restaurants. There is a liner which connects Ilovik with Mali Lošinj on a daily basis, while fast ferry sails to Rijeka. During the summer season, the excursion ships are sailing from Mali and Veli Lošinj to Ilovik.
According to the one of the recent scientific studies – believe it or not – Ilovik is an island with the highest life expectancy in the world, alongside the Japanese Okinawa! Indeed, the locals can thank their longevity to stress-free life and healthy nutrition based on fresh seafood and vegetables grown in their gardens. Ilovik is overgrown with Mediterranean vegetation, pine forests, olive groves, and there are even two of century-old eucalyptus trees!
Colorful and fragrant flower gardens are an essential part of the culture of living for most of the island’s residents. Colorful oleanders, palm trees, and roses grow around almost every house, accurately describing Ilovik’s nickname, “Flower Island“!
THE HISTORY OF ILOVIK

Sidrište

Remains of the buildings that bring us back to the Roman times witness about interesting and ancient history. The oldest evidence of human settlements dates back to the Illyrian tribe Liburnians. The oldest known name of the island, Neumae Insulae, was recorded still at the 1071. It is believed that the founders of today’s Ilovik were Croatian immigrants who came from Veli Lošinj to the island in the late 18th century. An interesting fact is that there are three times more residents of Ilovik living in the USA than on the island. Today, the neighboring island of St. Peter is unpopulated but the traces of life can be dated back to early history. The walls that surround today’s cemetery are believed to be the remains of a Benedictine monastery, which was built in the 11th century.
At the end of the 16th century, Venetians had built a fortress on St. Peter to defend themselves against the frequent attacks. The fortress was demolished in the Napoleonic era in one of the many battles of France and England, in the wider area of the Lošinj archipelago. During the Austro-Hungarian reign, they build a fortress for the port administration, which served as customs during the Italian reign. The historical interweaving of life on these two neighboring islands follows the residents of
Ilovik throughout their lives. Their cemetery can be found on St. Peter, which has a symbolic meaning since the residents were sailing for the last time, but now to their final resting place.
